Industry challenges
Water-treatment targets differ widely: heavy-metal ions, anionic or cationic dyes, oil droplets and particles are removed by different mechanisms. Recommending nanocellulose without first classifying the pollutant easily mismatches the material's surface charge and the target.
What nanocellulose does
Nanocellulose provides adsorption and interfacial action through carboxyl, cationic or hydrophobic surface groups, and can be built into porous membranes, gels or composite adsorbents. Choose the material backwards from the pollutant's charge, wettability and the downstream solid-liquid separation.
Recommended grade
By pollutant: heavy metals → C-CNF or C-CNC first; anionic dyes → cationic CNF first; oil-water separation → hydrophobically modified CNF first.
Alternatives
Use CNF where formability and a porous skeleton matter; use CNC for small particles, high specific surface area or surface-functionalisation studies; evaluate BC structural materials for self-supporting wet membranes or three-dimensional carriers.
Trial suggestions
Screen adsorbent dosage at 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 g/L with different initial pollutant concentrations and pH. Record capacity, removal rate, kinetics, regeneration and ease of solid-liquid separation. Design flux, rejection and cycling tests separately for oil-water separation.
Common issues
- High removal but hard to recover: immobilise the nanocellulose on a membrane or gel carrier.
- Performance drops in high-salt water: check electrostatic screening.
- Poor selectivity: needs more targeted surface functionalisation.
- Lab results are not engineering capacity: validate against real wastewater and its interferents.
Note
These suggestions are for nanocellulose material selection and preliminary trials only, not fixed formulations, final process parameters or regulatory conclusions. Results depend on product type, surface groups, solids content, dispersion state, dosing method, and on the system's pH, ionic strength, resin/polymer/protein type, pigments, fillers and other additives. Run a blank and a dosage gradient to confirm the grade and process conditions for your own system. For food, cosmetic, medical and food-contact uses, confirm regulations, purity, testing and market access separately for the target market.
