Applications of Nanocellulose in Functional Hydrogels: Reinforcement, Rheological Regulation, and Flexible Sensing

Why Is Nanocellulose Suitable for Functional Hydrogels?

Nanocellulose possesses a high specific surface area, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and excellent network-forming capabilities, making it an important bio-based material for functional hydrogel research. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and bacterial cellulose (BC/BNC) can be incorporated into hydrogel systems through physical blending, hydrogen bonding, or chemical crosslinking, thereby improving mechanical properties, structural stability, and overall functionality.

Key Functions of Nanocellulose in Hydrogels

1. Mechanical Reinforcement and Toughening

The high aspect ratio of CNF facilitates the formation of interconnected fibrous networks, enhancing the tensile and compressive properties as well as the structural stability of hydrogels. CNC can serve as a nanoscale reinforcing filler to improve the mechanical performance of composite hydrogels.

2. Rheological Regulation and Formability

CNF can increase system viscosity and impart shear-thinning and thixotropic properties, making it suitable for research on injectable hydrogels, 3D bioprinting, and functional material fabrication.

3. Flexible Sensing and Conductive Hydrogels

Nanocellulose can be combined with conductive polymers, carbon-based materials, or ionically conductive components to develop flexible, deformation-responsive functional hydrogels for applications in flexible sensors, wearable electronics, and smart materials.

How to Select the Right Nanocellulose Material?

CNF / Carboxylated CNF (TO-CNF): Suitable for hydrogel reinforcement, rheological modification, 3D printing, and flexible sensing.

CNC / Carboxylated CNC: Suitable for nanoscale reinforcement, interfacial regulation, and functional composite hydrogels.

BC/BNC: Suitable for highly hydrated networks, flexible membranes, and biomedical hydrogel research.
